The bass usually plays a distinct salsa rhythm pattern known as the "Tumbao". Notice that the bass does not typically play anything on beats 1 or 5. In essence, beat 1 and 5 are "implied" rather than played. This bass pattern is probably the most confusing component of salsa music because, in most western music, we are accustomed to hearing the bass play reliably on beats 1 and 5, and we feel rhythmically adrift without this customary time-keeper. Unfortunately, at least in Salsa music, the bass is not our friend in finding beat 1.
